The hybrid cloud has been heralded as a promising IT operational model enabling enterprises to maintain security and control over the infrastructure on which their applications run. At the same time, it promises to maximize ROI from their local data center and leverage public cloud infrastructure for an occasional demand spike. Public clouds are relatively new in the IT landscape and their adoption has accelerated over the last few years with multiple vendors now offering solutions as well as improved on-ramps for workloads to ease the adoption of a hybrid cloud model. With these advances and the ability to choose between a local data center and multiple public cloud offerings, one fundamental question must still be answered: What, when and where to run workloads to assure performance while maximizing efficiency? In this whitepaper, we explore some of the players in Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and hybrid cloud, the challenges surrounding effective implementation, and how to iden

The Cloud, once a radical idea in IT, is now mainstream. Whether it’s email, backup or file sharing, most consumers probably use a cloud service or two. Similarly, most IT professionals are familiar with cloud service providers such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft Azure, and many companies have moved at least some of their information technology processes into the cloud. In fact, the cloud has become so popular it’s easy to assume that running IT applications on-premises is not cost competitive with a cloud based service. In this report Evaluator Group will test the validity of that assumption with a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) model analyzing a hyperconverged appliance solution from HPE and a comparable cloud service from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Most companies would love to move enterprise applications to the public cloud and cut the costs, complexities, and limitations of current infrastructure. Major public cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud have done well in enabling web, mobile, and content applications in the cloud. These are cloud-native applications designed to use cloud “object” storage, and object storage is very popular for use cases such as backup and disaster recovery. However, enterprise applications typically require “block” storage. Although native cloud block storage exists, it has several shortcomings, particularly around reliability, durability, and lack of data mobility. So, enterprise applications have largely stayed on-premises or in private clouds. Now there’s an innovative new way to move enterprise applications to the public cloud while actually reducing risks and tradeoffs. It’s called multicloud storage, and it’s an insanely simple, reliable, secure w

When it comes to performance, Azure SQL Database is built for you, the developer. Azure SQL Database is designed to make your work easier and let you focus on other priorities. It scales on the fly, without downtime, with capabilities that make it great for building multitenant software as a service (SaaS) apps. Plus, it learns and adapts to your database workload, whatever that may be, using built-in intelligence to continually adjust and improve over time. That said, there’s more to a successful app than impressive performance. That’s why we built Azure SQL Database to be just as intelligent in other areas, such as availability and security, so that you won’t need to worry about those essentials either. Finally, we built Azure SQL Database to let you work the way you want, using the tools and platforms you prefer. It’s why we call Azure SQL Database the intelligent database for developers. Read on to learn more, and we’re sure you’ll agree.

At its Build conference in May, Microsoft took the wraps off Cosmos DB, the new incarnation of its existing cloud-based Azure DocumentDB NoSQL database. With a nod to the dramatic, Microsoft terms Cosmos DB as its biggest database bet since SQL Server; it is positioning it as its flagship cloud database, suited for use cases ranging from security and fraud detection, to IoT (consumer and industrial), personalization, e-commerce, gaming, social networks, chats, messaging, bots, oil and gas recovery and refining, and smart utility grids. Cosmos DB is a good example of how cloud platform providers are rethinking databases for scalable, elastic environments and commodity infrastructure. The platform that is most comparable is Google Cloud Spanner, but each of these databases is engineered for different purposes: Cosmos DB as a globally distributed operational database and Spanner as a globally distributed SQL-supporting OLTP database. The highlights of Cosmos DB include its flexibility in

As a software vendor, you know that offering innovative solutions with built-in intelligence is becoming a requirement in today’s application marketplace. On top of this, you need to bring your apps to market as quickly as possible while providing more value for your customers, without incurring additional development and operating costs. Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI, extending a breadth and depth of intelligent services ready for use in the cloud. This enables you to jump in quickly to make use of existing tried-and-true AI models, and focus more effort on delivering quality products to customers. High-level services to jump-start your intelligent apps One of the key benefits of working with the Microsoft Azure AI platform is that the hard work has already been done. Developers can make use of services with pre-trained, customizable models rather than having to build their own models from the ground up. You can refine these models to better suit your customers’ needs and

Azure has been through many rounds of changes that have significantly affected the ways in which .NET and other developers interact with the platform. The shift in strategy has been rocky at times. In 2011, technology reviewers described Microsoft Azure as a confusing platform with a difficult to use web-based interface and incomprehensible documentation. Since then, the teams working on the platform have gradually improved it, resulting in a much more user-friendly platform that offers a well-organized array of services.
