The need for high-throughput wireless access was especially acute at Ligonier Valley High School, where hundreds of students, especially those in math and science classrooms located in one wing of the building, vied for simultaneous wireless connectivity to applications such as Larson Math and Science and the ALEKS one-on-one instructional system. Whether in the math and science wing or other areas of the school, bandwidth-intensive streaming video, multicast within classrooms, is common.

The technology that powers organizations has undergone several major transitions since the birth of computing. In the 1960s, the mainframe was the dominant compute model, and it gave way to minicomputing about a decade later. In the 1990s, businesses eventually shifted to PC-based computing in the client/server era. This model was eventually supplanted by Internet computing as the dominant compute model. Today, the technology industry finds itself in the midst of the most significant transition ever: the shift to mobile computing.

Offices aren’t productivity factories anymore—they’re collaboration centers where individuals and groups can develop their best ideas. That means building out an office takes a whole new approach, and it isn’t just about using aesthetics and shiny toys to attract top talent (although that is part of it). Successful offices are functional tools that bring technology and people together so they can do their best work. Cisco® Collaboration tools bring people together to speed the decision-making process and help you execute on your most innovative ideas while cutting operational waste. Bring Cisco Collaboration to your workplace and create a workplace that works.

The evolution from business connectivity to business mobility is unlike previous compute transitions because it redefines how people work. Historically, companies provided access to the necessary applications and data from corporate-issued devices such as laptops and desktops in controlled operating environments. This tightly integrated environment tethered workers to a specific device and operating system, and even sometimes to a location. Mobility breaks these shackles and enables workers to change the way they work.

Walk past your data center, and you might hear a soft, plaintive call: “Feed me, feed me…” It is not your engineers demanding more pizza. It is your servers and applications. And the call is growing louder New Cisco® 40-Gbps bidirectional (BiDi) optical technology lets you bring 40-Gbps speeds to the access layer using the same 10-Gbps cable plant you are using today. It is a huge cost savings, whether you are upgrading your current data center or building a new one. And it means you can start taking advantage of 40-Gbps performance for your business right now without needing special budget approval and without having to wait a year to get the capacity you need.
