While the store remains the cornerstone of the shopping experience, our survey of more than 26,000 customers across a range of grocery and non-grocery retail categories, reveals that today’s empowered consumers are increasingly comfortable purchasing through multiple retail channels. The much discussed trend of "Showrooming," threatens to fragment hard-earned customer loyalty. Retailers can convert the threat to opportunity by making their customers "sticky" through a seamless omni-channel approach that provides consistency, convenience and a superior shopping experience across every consumer touch point.

Over the past 10 years, the Internet has provided unprecedented access to information. Consequently, B2B buyers are constantly online learning about industry trends and innovative solutions to their pain points. Given their busy schedules, buyers have grown accustomed to the convenience of researching and comparing multiple options online, narrowing their choices independently of the vendor and, only then, engaging with sales. While buyers have always made the final purchase decision, in today’s world, the vendor is not given an opportunity to engage until the buyer is close to a choice. Today, the buyer is in control of their own journey.

Historically, the speed of a wired connection at the access edge has always been faster than that of a wireless connection. This means workers had to choose between the performance of wired connectivity and the convenience of a wireless connection. Consequently, workers often had to modify the way they worked— first, finding a wired port to use for high-bandwidth applications, such as video or streaming media, and then shifting to wireless connections when the need to be mobile was more important than having the performance of wired. Today, though, the industry sits on the precipice of the biggest innovation in the history of wireless LAN: the release of 802.11ac Wave 2. Wave 1 of 802.11ac brought network speeds that were 1.3 Gbps (Gigabits per second), which is on par with wired networking speeds. However, 802.11ac Wave 2 shatters the gigabit barrier with speeds of up to 6.8 Gbps.

The key to understanding the evolving role of VoIP is recognizing that it’s a lot more than just another method for making voice calls. Buying VoIP means more than simply replacing your existing phone system with a functionally identical one running over an IP network. In fact, the underlying IP technology makes possible great advances in the convenience and capabilities of phone systems. Most important of these is that it allows the integration of voice calling with multiple other methods of communication. Both sellers and buyers of VoIP products that build their strategies around this reality will fare best.

In turn, consumers have become better informed and able to connect with brands with greater flexibility and convenience. However, concerns around mismanagement of customer data, the proliferation of fake news, high profile retailer database breaches, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal has contributed to an erosion of trust between consumers and brands and demands for data privacy. What can brands do to overcome consumer skepticism? What keeps a customer coming back in 2018? And what can brands do to demonstrate relevancy and provide value?

Convenience is absolutely critical to succeeding in e-commerce. Any glitches along the path to purchase potentially result in a lost sale. That's one reason we think Apple Pay's new mobile payment feature that uses a fingerprint is going to be a game changer. Its another step in reducing hurdles to online buying. You see it, you select it, you pay with your finger. What could be more convenient? Not interested in Apple Pay? Or unable to use it? At the very least, make sure customers that shop on multiple devices are recognized, no matter which device they log into. Giving them access to their stored information will make for a much smoother checkout.

Financial institutions (FIs) must support the channels and services that consumers demand in order to remain competitive with each other and with disruptive competitors. To that end, supporting account opening, delivering new transactional features, and facilitating payments through digital channels have become table stakes. Unfortunately, the speed and convenience that these capabilities afford is a benefit to consumers and fraudsters alike. To successfully prevent fraud while retaining the benefits of offering digital financial services, FIs must understand how fraudsters are exploiting these capabilities and fight fraud with customer experience in mind.
