For years, costs have continued to climb, while reimbursements have declined or, at best, remained stable. Previous best practices for cleaning healthcare facilities centered on sanitizing frequently touched objects, such as bed rails or call buttons, because these objects were believed to be major sources of contagion. However, this new study finds that floors are the largest potential source of pathogens after reviewing five participating Cleveland-area hospitals. Specifically, the following findings are highlighted in the study: • Patient room floors in five hospitals were found to be contaminated with healthcare-associated pathogens. • High-touch objects often came to be in direct contact with the floor. • Touching objects on the floor frequently resulted in transfer of pathogens to hands. • Floors in hospital rooms are overlooked as a source for pathogen dissemination, with potentially dangerous results.

Value-based care is the predominant model for enabling the healthcare industry to control costs and deliver better information to consumers. The basic idea is that reimbursements are based on the quality of the outcome of a procedure, episode of care, use of a device or therapy. Under this model, life sciences companies are rewarded for improving health outcomes and/or reducing the costs to achieve those outcomes. It requires life sciences companies to rethink many of their processes, from R&D through the commercial phase. Navigating those momentous shifts requires that life sciences companies embrace a range of digital technologies which will enable a holistic approach to value-based care. This white paper will examine the drive for value-based care, its impact on life sciences companies and how technology platforms can address the challenges the industry is facing.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is unique in this EMA Radar in its ability to combine two threads – a single analytic overlay as embodied in its Service Health Analyzer (SHA) product, and a broader suite solution optimized for HP to participate in all three use cases here with maximum functional impact. This is not entirely a black-and-white situation, as SHA does leverage and currently largely depends on integration with HP Business Service Management 9.1, which is itself a suite. But SHA can assimilate other third-party sources, checks out brilliantly in early-phase deployments in terms of time-to-value and analytic power, and is the lead reason for HP’s strong Value Leader showing in technical performance management.
