New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Throughout the industrialized world, healthcare systems are in crisis. Aging populations and skyrocketing costs are putting unprecedented financial and organizational pressure on healthcare providers and payers. The result is often a decreasing level of care. In response, fundamental changes are taking place. Patient-centric systems are evolving in which the patient's well-being and the responsibility for good health are defining treatment and operational policies.

Direct digital manufacturing, otherwise known as rapid manufacturing, is a process that employs additive fabrication technology (aka rapid prototyping) to produce end-use items. Directly from CAD data, components are manufactured without molding, casting or machining. The impact of direct digital manufacturing is far-reaching, and the opportunities and advantages are extensive. This is why direct digital manufacturing is heralded as the next industrial revolution.

Industrial enterprises around the world are retooling their factories with advanced technologies to boost manufacturing flexibility and speed, achieving new levels of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), supply chain responsiveness, and customer satisfaction in the process. This renaissance reflects very real pressures industry players face today. For years, traditional factories have been operating at a disadvantage, impeded by production environments that are “disconnected”—at the very least strictly gated—to corporate business systems, to supply chains, and to customers and partners.

Showing a softer side of manufacturing is winning over executives, according to a new study conducted by the FORTUNE Knowledge Group and gyro. While conventional wisdom and the standard manufacturing marketing approach would indicate that hard elements are more compelling, this new research suggests that the opposite is true: A significant majority of business leaders are moving to a more innate approach to decision-making, trusting their gut and relying on “soft” factors, such as company culture, reputation and level of trust, to help them make decisions.
