System vulnerabilities, ransomware, malware, intrusions, and other malicious activities are on the rise, showing that today’s cybersecurity professionals are hard-pressed to keep enterprises secure. Although threats are growing in sophistication and attack vectors are expanding, many of the intrusions and cyber attacks happening today are simply a result of improper protections being put in place, systems going unpatched, or weak security policies. While much of the blame is being placed on cybersecurity professionals, the real blame should often be placed upon the tools and policies that many of those professionals have come to trust and the complexity that comes with them.

Today’s threat landscape has forced us, once again, to evolve how we think about and deliver effective security to protect endpoints (PCs, Macs, Linux, mobile devices, etc). Malware today is either on an endpoint or it’s headed there. Advanced malware is dynamic, can compromise environments from an array of attack vectors, take endless form factors, launch attacks over time, and can quickly exfiltrate data from endpoints. Such malware, including polymorphic and environmentally aware malware, is very good at masking itself and evading traditional security tools, which can lead to a breach. As a result, it’s no longer a question of “if” malware can penetrate defenses and get onto endpoints, it’s a question of “when”.

The monthly intelligence report, provides the latest analysis of cyber security threats, trends, and insights from the Symantec intelligence team concerning malware, spam, and other potentially harmful business risks. Key Findings • The .doc file type was the most common attachment type used in spear-phishing attacks, making up more than 52.9 percent of all attachments in September. • The largest data breach reported in September actually took place in April, and resulted in the exposure of 56 million identities. • There were 600 vulnerabilities disclosed in the month of September, the highest number so far in 2014 and second-highest in the last 12 months.

We often think of malware as being designed to sit beneath the radar, collecting data in stealth mode, for the purposes of fraud or corporate espionage. Increasingly however, we’re witnessing attacks on corporations designed to cause substantial economic losses via wholesale destruction. For example, the Shamoon malware that recently hit Saudi Arabia-based Aramco (the world’s largest oil company) and RasGas (a Qatar-based gas company) corrupted files on tens of thousands of workstations, overwriting the Master Boot Records. These malware attacks, which may well have targeted website vulnerabilities, resulted in destruction on an industrial scale. At Aramco, IT professionals were forced to replace 30,000 PCs and laptops. RasGas meanwhile, had to shut down all email communications, and the company’s website was forced offline.
