Cloud-based solutions are revolutionizing the way that enterprises conduct business. These web-based versions of common business tools, like analytics or document management tools, retain most or all of the functionality of their desktop versions and provide significant access, customization, and utility to end users. More organizations are ditching on-premises solutions and adopting cloud-based tools, also known as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), "hosted," or "on-demand" solutions. The are becoming invaluable assets in today's agile and mobile workforce.

Regardless of whether your data resides on-premises, in the cloud, or a combination of both, you are vulnerable to security threats, data breaches, data loss, and more. Security is often cited as a concern for organizations who are migrating to the public cloud, but the belief that the public cloud is not secure is a myth. In fact, the leading public cloud service providers have built rigorous security capabilities to ensure that your applications, assets, and services are protected. Security in the public cloud is now becoming a driver for many organizations, but in a rapidly evolving multicloud environment, you must keep up with changes that might impact your security posture. This eBook outlines the three core recommendations for cloud security across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

A number of recent surveys indicate that cloud costs are becoming a major concern for businesses, many of whom have found cloud computing to be more expensive than they thought. The surveys align with Gartner’s 2017 prediction that “through 2020, 80% of businesses will overshoot their cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) budgets due to a lack of cost optimization approaches”. This could be due to a lack of understanding about cloud pricing, or a lack of knowledge about the full range of measures that can be taken to reduce cloud costs. The one area in which businesses are struggling to control costs more than any other is the hybrid cloud. Analysts attribute hybrid cloud overspend to the complexity of operating a private or public cloud in conjunction with an on-premises infrastructure. Businesses using VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS don’t experience as much operational complexity in their hybrid environments, but they can still be guilty of overspending. This eBook will offer 6 Ways to

The all-encompassing data center is a thing of the past. Modern data environments are distributed and include remote and branch offices, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as cloud solutions such as infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS). There’s more critical data to back up than ever before. Plus, data silos and fragmented management mean poor visibility, which can make it difficult to comply with regional data residency and security rules as well as service-level agreements (SLAs). On-premises data protection has not kept pace. According to a survey by Fujitsu, 45% of IT managers said they had lost data or productivity related to data protection inefficiency within the last year.1 Often, this is because on-premises backups are cumbersome and do not always happen on time.

Enterprises of all sizes are challenged to effectively provide secure access to a rapidly growing mosaic of cloud, on-premise and mobile applications. Whether sanctioned by the enterprise IT group of purchased by departmental shadow IT organizations, individually provisioned applications present a great management burden with multiple negative operational effects: • Time and money wasted by manual on-and off-boarding, and lost passwords. • Security risk from weak, easy-to-remember passwords, as well as from system access by former employees whose credentials are not promptly revoked. • Lack of visibility into who accesses which application, and from where. As a result, enterprises and users encounter a range of obstacles that prevent them from securely operating at speed. At best, users who clamor for access to applications are inconvenienced when they don’t get access quickly enough, or not at all. Worst case, because today’s IT footprint is large and porous, companies face headline-m

Corporate data spreads across an ever-growing number of applications. Users (employees, contractors, partners, and customers) access those applications over a wide range of devices. Those devices take different forms: desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, smartwatches. Each device may use a different operating system. The locations from where people access your data can be on-premises or off, and in any number of places around the globe. Data, users, apps, devices, locations—the sheer number of permutations and combinations is mind-boggling. This complex nature of today’s IT environment opens security gaps and exposes your business to undue risk. To illustrate, try to envision all the permutations and possible entry points for risk in your organization. Imagine that you have 400 users, each using 25 apps. When you multiply those together, that’s 10,000 potential access permissions to manage. Access permissions change as users come and go, roles change, new apps are added, and

Cloud has evolved from a technological innovation to an integral part of business. Companies in every industry are investing in Digital Transformation initiatives to evolve and grow; often, cloudbased platforms are foundational elements of these transformations, as businesses increasingly seek the flexibility and agility to roll out new software services in days or weeks, versus months or years. As Digital Transformation initiatives unfold, one key challenge is to modernize the data center to facilitate rapid delivery of new applications and services—while still ensuring that existing missioncritical applications remain high performing, available, and secure. Another challenge relates to new requirements for accelerating the analysis of organizational data to near real time, much faster than previously possible with earlier incarnations of Business Intelligence (BI). Agile businesses are demanding faster access to the information contained within operational and business data stores to

Businesses are struggling with numerous variables to determine what their stance should be regarding artificial intelligence (AI) applications that deliver new insights using deep learning. The business opportunities are exceptionally promising. Not acting could potentially be a business disaster as competitors gain a wealth of previously unavailable data to grow their customer base. Most organizations are aware of the challenge, and their lines of business (LOBs), IT staff, data scientists, and developers are working to define an AI strategy. IDC believes that this emerging environment is to date still highly undefined, even as businesses must make critical decisions. Should businesses develop in-house or use VARs, systems integrators, or consultants? Should they deploy on-premise, in the cloud, or in some hybrid form? Can they use existing infrastructure, or do AI applications and deep learning require new servers with new capabilities? We believe that many of these questions can be

Today, hybrid cloud is increasingly the norm, and enterprises are challenged with ways to have visibility, manage and make use of all this data – both on-premises and in the cloud. While much attention has been given to primary data affecting mission-critical workloads, data for secondary workloads – backup, test/dev, disaster recovery, and archiving to name a few – have become siloed the same way application data has, leading to multiple point solutions to manage an increasing amount of data. This white paper looks at the evolution of these challenges and offers practical advice on ways to store, manage and move secondary data in hybrid cloud architectures while extracting the hidden value it can provide. The energy landscape has become increasingly complex. Globally, we’re relying less on centralized, steady power sources – such as gas-fired and coal-fired power stations – and more on mixed, locally-distributed renewable energy supplies including solar, wind, tidal and battery. While this is positive for the environment and carbon emissions, it makes balancing power grids a much more complex task. Power quality and reliability becomes more variable in output, while demand for power continues to increase steadily. But when it comes to energy resilience, many organizations simply don’t know where to start. What solutions are available? Which are the best ones for their specific situation and physical premises? What will be their return on investment? Is it simply the cost of doing business, or is there actually a business case? The guide will give you the tools and data to build your understanding and quantify the benefit for your organization.
