Many businesses are beginning to understand that hybrid cloud can provide the best of both worlds: on-demand access to much-needed IT resources, and the flexibility to move workloads onsite or offsite to meet specific needs. The most common question is not “Why hybrid cloud?” but “How do we get started?” Depending on your specific IT strategy and requirements, consider evaluating the following five types of workloads for hybrid cloud.

Malware that encrypts a victim’s data until the extortionist’s demands are met is one of the most common forms of cybercrime. And the prevalence of ransomware attacks continues to increase. Cybercriminals are now using more than 50 different forms of ransomware to target and extort money from unsuspecting individuals and businesses. Ransomware attacks are pervasive. More than 4,000 ransomware attacks happen every day, and the volume of attacks is increasing at a rate of 300 percent annually. According to an IDT911 study, 84 percent of small and midsize businesses will not meet or report ransomware demands. No one is safe from ransomware, as it attacks enterprises and SMBs, government agencies, and individuals indiscriminately. While ransomware demands more than doubled in 2016 to $679 from $294 in 2015, the cost of remediating the damage and lost productivity is many multiples higher.

IT admins tasked with restoring servers or lost data during a disruption are consumed with a single-minded purpose: successful recovery. But it shouldn’t take an adverse event to underscore the importance of recovery as part of an overall backup strategy. This is especially true with large datasets. Before you consider how you’re going to back up large datasets, first consider how you may need to recover the data.

In the last few years, businesses have changed the way they protect data. Studies show they’re abandoning traditional backup and recovery in favor of disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS).1 With DRaaS, businesses enjoy the luxury of keeping a replica of their data hosted at a remote site that they can fail over to in an emergency—without bearing any of the infrastructure costs or maintenance responsibilities. All infrastructure and maintenance is the responsibility of the provider. Gartner predicts that global DRaaS revenue will reach $3.4 billion by 2019. The firm cited several reasons for the shift:

Disruption to data availability has the ability to cripple an organisation, and in the consumer goods market, restricted access to data could cause goods to take longer to get to market. To prepare for data outages, it is imperative that businesses have effective backup and recovery solutions in place to minimise downtime and maintain functionality. This case study examines how PT Wings Surya, a leader in the Indonesian consumer goods market, was able to increase business uptime, cut the time taken to run backup jobs from 8 to just 2 hours, and reduce backup costs by 60%.

In today’s application driven, cloud agnostic world, many organizations still rely on legacy, multiple point backup and recovery products that consist of backup software, target storage, media and master servers, and cloud gateways, all from different vendors. With slow backups and long recovery times of their existing backup products, organizations are unable to meet their tight business SLAs. Constant forklift upgrades and complex management UIs make it expensive to manage the current backup and recovery environments.

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is a public research university and one of the 10 campuses of the University of California system. Its secondary storage was a combination of multiple point solutions. The UI/setup and maintenance was complex. Maintaining multiple licensing and maintenance agreements negatively impacted the administrative cost. The skyrocketing cost for additional backup capacity limited the team’s ability to expand their backup protection to many critical systems. With Cohesity's unified hyperconverged secondary storage platform, the IT team provided a single solution for all 13 departments to consolidate their backups on one platform, and scale-out as required. Read the case study and get details on how UCSB consolidated everything from backup to recovery, analytics to monitoring and alerting.

With the ongoing shift towards open-source database solutions, it’s no surprise that PostgreSQL is the fastest growing database. While it’s tempting to simply compare the licensing costs of proprietary systems against that of open source, it is both a misleading and incorrect approach when evaluating the potential for return on investment of a database technology migration. After a PostgreSQL deployment is live, there are a variety of day-two scenarios that require planning and strategizing. The third section of this eBook provides a detailed analysis of all aspects accelerating large-scale PostgreSQL deployments: ?
