The ongoing adoption of cloud computing by communications service providers (CSPs) continues to fundamentally reshape their business models and technology strategies on several levels. One such area that is garnering significant attention is the impact of the cloud on security services. This is because security services and the vital tools they encompass can be empowered through the adoption of a carrier cloud model. This, in turn, better positions CSPs to meet the demands of their customers, including those in the small to medium-size business (SMB) market segment. The timing of this migration is optimal, since many SMBs now recognize the threats they face and realize that given their limited IT budgets and lack of security expertise, CSPs are well positioned to protect them from cyberattacks. While the opportunity for CSPs is significant, many are hesitant to make a move in this area because they want to ensure they can address SMBs’ needs and maintain control of the service in a car

Competitive pressures from peers are forcing CSPs to evolve beyond connectivity and offer incremental valueadded services to sustain revenue growth. Security services are an obvious candidate for consideration since awareness of the need for security protections is extremely high due to regular media coverage highlighting Internet exploits. Threat trends and strong alignment with large customer segments are creating opportunity for CSPs to offer a foundational layer of web protection for every Internet access connection. They can provide a previously unavailable level of web security that reduces the risk their customers face, without imposing a configuration or management burden.

In January 2016, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program released a draft of its high-impact baseline for moving federal data to the cloud. Not long after, Amazon Web Services (AWS) accepted an offer to pilot the new security threshold. AWS worked with FedRAMP to develop a set of standards under which highly sensitive government data could securely migrate into cloud environments. If ever you doubted that cloud computing was the new frontier for federal data and software management, look around. Over 2,300 government agencies worldwide have already migrated to the AWS Cloud. And in the U.S., this will only increase with the release of FedRAMP’s high baseline standards. Previously, CSPs could only become certified at a low or moderate baseline under FedRAMP, meaning agencies had no security baseline from which to spring their sensitive data into the cloud. These new standards effectively represent the fall of the final formal barrier to federal cloud computing. Terabytes o

Enterprise applications are moving to the cloud, and for good reasons: The cloud offers a host of potential benefits for both small & mid-sized businesses and large enterprises. These benefits include lower costs, scalable and flexible deployment options, lower capital spending, and access to innovative applications. Communications Service Providers (CSPs), meanwhile, see more opportunities to offer more bandwith to businesses within their footprint.

A recent Gartner survey found that 80% of respondents using public cloud are using more than one cloud service provider (CSP). As databases move to the cloud, the database management service vendor landscape is shrinking, and data governance and integration are becoming more complex. Are you ready for the impact of multicloud deployments on data and analytics strategies in your own organization? This new Gartner report on multicloud and intercloud data management provides an impact appraisal along with recommendations for leaders planning to incorporate multiple CSPs into their data management strategies.

ESG recently conducted a quantitative research study to assess companies’ IT Transformation maturity. ESG found that operating a modern server environment, defined as an environment in which operations tasks are more automated than manual, led to a perception of cost parity with the public cloud. Nearly half felt their cost of compute was highly competitive with CSPs and another 48% felt it was generally comparable. This compares favorably to the 19% and 47% respectively among organizations running a legacy server environment. Download this solution brief from Dell EMC and Intel® to learn more.

DigitalOcean commissioned Cloud Spectator to evaluate the performance of virtual machines (VMs) from three different Cloud Service Providers (CSPs): Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean. Cloud Spectator tested the various VMs to evaluate the CPU performance, Random Access Memory (RAM) and storage read and write performance of each provider’s VMs. The purpose of the study was to understand Cloud service performance among major Cloud providers with similarly-sized VMs using a standardized, repeatable testing methodology. Based on the analysis, DigitalOcean’s VM performance was superior in nearly all measured VM performance dimensions, and DigitalOcean provides some of the most compelling performance per dollar available in the industry.

Communications service providers (CSPs) have long recognized the potential of data analytics. Yet their early efforts to pull actionable intelligence from the oceans of data they have access to were largely unsuccessful. Many tried a 'big bang' approach to building a central repository without knowing what they wanted to do with the data in it. The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) – its machine learning subset in particular – has changed their thinking and approach. For this Quick Insights report, we surveyed 64 professionals from CSPs around the world who are applying, leveraging and/ or planning to deploy advanced analytics in some capacity at various points across the customer lifecycle.

Telecommunications companies lost more than $29 billion to consumer fraud in 2017 globally (1.27% of their revenues). The largest and most advanced communications service providers (CSPs) have sophisticated fraud detection systems and processes in place, but those organizations are now questioning their fraud readiness. Are they doing enough? Fraudsters may be individuals or increasingly sophisticated criminal networks. They constantly develop new methods and target new lines of business Read this interview where Anat Hoida, Head of the FICO’s Telecom Practice in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, discusses the impacts of the evolving spectrum of fraud risks on the growth and competitiveness of CSPs globally.

Delivering personalized customer experience remains the top business challenge for communications service providers (CSPs). Ovum's recently published 2018 ICT Enterprise survey saw almost all CSP IT executives interviewed identify delivering personalized customer experience as one of their three most important business challenges for the next 18 months. This trend emphasizes the high priority CSPs place on how customer relationships are managed. However, several factors have an impact on CSPs' ability to identify and then deliver customers' core needs. These include understanding the data sets they should focus on; collecting, cleansing, and consolidating these data sets; and having the right expertise to mine the data sets.

Commoditization is a serious threat to the telecommunications industry. Most CSPs offer similar services at rates designed to win what has become a price war. As a result, many face decreasing margins and difficulty sustaining differentiation based on prices or products alone. On top of commoditization, CSPs also face competition from OTT providers and an increasingly knowledgeable and demanding customer base. With access to growing amounts of data from an ever-increasing number of sources and devices, today’s empowered, savvy consumers know what they want and expect to get it.

While IMS is not new, complete virtualization of IMS (vIMS) is new. Network functions virtualization (NFV) provides operators with the ability to rapidly and inexpensively deploy, configure, launch, and upgrade services, which can lead to faster time to market and lower operating costs, providing an important competitive advantage against traditional CSPs and new OTT service providers. It can also reduce the business risk associated with new service introductions. This agility allows operators to offer trials of new service offerings on a much larger scale, leading to acceleration of new revenue generation.
