Software-defined architectures have transformed enterprises seeking to become application-centric, with many modern data centers now running a combination of cloud-native applications based on microservices architectures alongside traditional applications. With application owners seeking publiccloud- like simplicity and flexibility in their own data centers, IT teams are under pressure to deliver services and resolve application issues quickly, while simultaneously reducing provisioning time for new applications and lowering costs for application services.

Leading organizations don’t think of data protection in traditional back-office terms—and that’s no accident. They think and act like service providers, and in doing so transform data protection operations from mere cost centers to business enablers. Traditional data protection architectures can’t meet today’s challenges of massive growth, application performance, and data availability. And they aren't designed for services-oriented business models.

Poor rack cable management has proven to many data center operators to be a source of downtime and frustration during moves, adds and changes. It can also lead to data transmission errors, safety hazards, poor cooling efficiency, and a negative overall look and feel of the data center. This paper discuses the benefits of effective rack cable management, provides guidance for cable management within IT racks including high density and networking IT racks, which will improve cable traceability and troubleshooting time while reducing the risk of human error.

Raising IT inlet temperatures is a common recommendation given to data center operators as a strategy to improve data center efficiency. While it is true that raising the temperature does result in more economizer hours, it does not always have a positive impact on the data center overall. In this paper, we provide a cost (capex & energy) analysis of a data center to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the data center holistically, inclusive of the IT equipment energy. The impact of raising temperatures on server failures is also discussed.

As IT advances, organizations are adopting infrastructures that enhance agility and improve efficiency. Data centers are evolving to a state that is almost unrecognizable from only a few years ago. Numerous forces, such as cloud computing and powerful orchestration solutions, are combining to fundamentally change data centers, making them more powerful, sophisticated, flexible and efficient. Many organizations are adopting a hybrid infrastructure data center model that combines a variety of technologies and methodologies, including virtualization, private clouds and other internal IT resources, along with external options such as hosting, colocation, Software as a Service (SaaS) applications and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offerings.

Years of IT infrastructure advancements have helped to drive out vast amounts of costs within the datacenter. Technologies like server and storage virtualization, data deduplication, and flash-based storage systems (to name just a few) have contributed to improvements of utilization rates, performance, and resiliency for most organizations. Unfortunately, organizations still struggle with deeply rooted operational inefficiencies related to IT departments with silos of technology and expertise that lead to higher complexity, limited scalability, and suboptimal levels of agility. The recent tectonic shifts caused by the rise of 3rd Platform applications that focus on social, mobile, cloud, and big data environments have amplified the pains associated with these structural inefficiencies.

The data center is central to IT strategy and houses the computational power, storage resources, and applications necessary to support an enterprise business. A flexible data center infrastructure than can support and quickly deploy new applications can result in significant competitive advantage, but designing such a data center requires solid initial planning and thoughtful consideration of port density, access-layer uplink bandwidth, true server capacity, oversubscription, mobility, and other details.

The data center has gone through many major evolutionary changes over the past several decades, and each change has been defined by major shifts in architectures. The industry moved from the mainframe era to client/server computing and then to Internet computing. In 2011, another major shift began: the shift to a virtual data center. This has been the primary driver in enabling customers to transition to the cloud and ultimately IT as a service. The shift to a virtual data center will be the single biggest transition in the history of computing. It will reshape all the major data center tiers: applications, storage, servers and the network.

The four pillars of computing — cloud, mobility, social, and analytics — are driving new levels of network innovation in datacenter networks. These forces are now buffeting the datacenter along with virtualization and the Internet of Things (IoT), resulting in sweeping changes in traffic patterns that expose the limitations of traditional networks and their operational models. To become a resource rather than a bottleneck to overall datacenter performance, the network must deliver not just exceptional performance and scalability but also unprecedented automation and orchestration that can yield agility, flexibility, and service velocity. This Technology Spotlight examines these key trends and discusses the role that Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) plays in addressing these ongoing challenges for enterprise IT and network managers.
