Changing business needs and the drive toward cost efficiencies and performance mean an end to reliance on traditional, proprietary storage approaches. Modern storage infrastructure enables CIOs to tackle some of their biggest pain points and put their data to work rather than viewing that data as a cost center. Driven by a desire to be flexible and “do more with less,” IT leaders are embracing things like software-defined storage, because it emphasizes freedom and openness.

Kenzan, a software engineering firm that specializes in building scalable, data-driven solutions, often leverages DataStax Enterprise (DSE) for customers that have high expectations for both performance and value. That means making careful, informed choices when designing the cloud infrastructure that applications run on. Controlling costs is always a priority for businesses that rely on AWS for running DSE. With AWS, it can be tempting to solve performance issues simply by adding more resources until the problem goes away. However, this “solution” results in increased costs which quickly add up over time. In this white paper, Kenzan and DataStax identify some of the key factors to consider when building out infrastructure on AWS, outlining practical steps you can take to optimize performance with DSE on AWS while keeping costs in check.

Today, a range of diverse cyber-adversaries — including nation-states, cybercriminals, competitors, hacktivists, and insiders/contractors — pose financial, reputational and regulatory risk to industrial and critical infrastructure organizations. The business impact can include costly production downtime, safety failures, and environmental release of hazardous materials, as well as theft of corporate secrets such as sensitive information about formulas and proprietary manufacturing processes. The challenge is compounded as organizations adopt digitization initiatives and IT/OT convergence to support the business — removing any “air-gaps” that may have existed in the past. To help security and operations teams stay ahead of the latest ICS/SCADA threats, CyberX — the industrial cybersecurity company founded by military cyber experts with nation-state experience securing critical infrastructure — has partnered with SANS to create educational content about emerging ICS threat vectors and

Managing the PC life-cycle environment can be a complicated and expensive process. Enterprises with old and outdated systems require increased support, have higher maintenance costs, and see interrupted workforce productivity. However, consolidating processes and enlisting the help of vendor partners will greatly reduce costs and provide expert-level knowledge for a better PC life-cycle management operation. In April 2016, Dell commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a study with 230 IT decision-makers with knowledge of desktop infrastructure environments at their organization. All respondents were significantly involved in the decision-making process for PC and device management and had significant expert-level knowledge about the PC life-cycle process.

In a market where compute and storage resources can be bought on demand with a credit card, vendors of on-premises hardware are seeking to tip the scales in their favor with ‘cloud-like’ pricing models that eliminate the need to commit capital to new platforms. At Dell EMC World in May, Dell Financial Services (DFS) rolled out Cloud Flex for HCI (hyperconverged infrastructure), part of the company’s push to evangelize the start-small-and-scale-up virtues of HCI technology. Cloud Flex lets customers acquire equipment on an all-opex basis, with no up-front product cost, steady monthly payments that reduce by up to 30% annually, and the ability to turn in equipment any time after 12 months without penalty. It’s part of a series of moves by Dell EMC meant to ease the financial risk of sticking with on-premises infrastructure in a cloud-enabled world

For many companies the appeal of the public cloud is very real. For tech startups, the cloud may be their only option, since many don’t have the capital or expertise to build and operate the IT systems their businesses need. Existing companies with established data centers are also looking at public clouds, to increase IT agility while limiting risk. The idea of building-out their production capacity while possibly reducing the costs attached to that infrastructure can be attractive. For most companies the cloud isn’t an “either-or” decision, but an operating model to be evaluated along with on-site infrastructure. And like most infrastructure decisions the question of cost is certainly a consideration. In this report we’ll explore that question, comparing the cost of an on-site hyperconverged solution with a comparable set up in the cloud. The on-site infrastructure is a Dell EMC VxRailTM hyperconverged appliance cluster and the cloud solution is Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Understanding, managing and containing risk has become a critical factor for many organizations as they plot their hybrid architecture strategy. Access by an expanding array of privileged identities looms large as a risk concern once organizations look beyond tactically using cloud services for cost and agility efficiencies. Existing approaches developed for static infrastructure can address initial risk concerns, but fall short in providing consistent policy enforcement and continuous visibility for dynamic, distributed infrastructure.

IT is undergoing a significant transformation as businesses look to streamline costs and roll out a new class of cloud-based applications driven by a changing digital economy. The IT infrastructure as we know it today is not well equipped to improve on the cost structure for traditional workloads nor handle the velocity demands of a new generation of workloads where IT is a focal point for competitive differentiation. As one approach to address these changing demands of IT, vendors are bringing to market new solutions under a new category called “composable infrastructure”.

Modern enterprises are doing their best to address three simultaneous and closely interrelated objectives related to their information technology/infrastructure: To identify and assess security-related risks, and manage them to an acceptable level To achieve, sustain, and demonstrate compliance with policies and regulatory requirements To improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of ongoing operations, e.g., to provide greater flexibility and scale at lower total annual cost For several years now, Aberdeen Group has referred to this trifecta of strategic objectives as the quest for enterprise computing infrastructure to be secure, compliant, and well-managed.

Application consolidation can be an important cloud initiative. By consolidating applications on an all-flash, cloud-centric platform, IT has the opportunity to reduce costs, lower risk and support a more integrated and interoperable infrastructure. But for any organization thinking about application consolidation, it is important to closely evaluate the features and functions of the underlying all-flash storage platform. You want to make sure that your platform not only delivers the performance you need, but also enables you to reduce costs, eliminate migrations, simplify operations and support cloud-enabled business agility.

"It is very well understood that Business Enterprises today need to become more agile, meet new and increasing workload and security requirements, while reducing overall IT cost and risk. To meet these requirements and remain competitive many companies are turning to cloud computing. Companies thus need to formulate a strategy that can easily move them from traditional on-premises IT to private or public clouds. Oracle understand the need for IT organizations to move to cloud computing at the same time also recognizes that moving to the cloud is a multi-step journey that starts with standardization and consolidation of IT infrastructure and ends by moving applications and data to the cloud. The PDF is meant to help you gauge through the Oracle’s SPARC servers and give you an experience of simplified journey to the cloud by using the same technology for both cloud and on-premises deployments.
