Agile integration — combining integration technologies, Agile delivery techniques, and cloud-native platforms to improve speed and security of software delivery — is a critical foundation for successful digital transformation. The pace of digital innovation and disruption continues to accelerate, driving the need for faster change to business models, processes, and applications. Firms that can quickly reconfigure and reconnect old and new applications have the advantage, and those with slow integration processes are at serious risk of losing customers. An Agile combination of integration and custom development is needed to meet the customer’s expectations and avoid losing market share to competitors that do put the customer first.1 For this study, we assessed the differences between successful and less successful Agile integration and app delivery strategies, why some firms can change their business faster, and what makes one integration strategy better than another.

Agile is all about change. IT leaders adopt agile to accelerate the pace of change for their business-differentiable software. Adopting agile requires changes throughout the people, processes and technologies involved in building that software. Development teams must significantly change their structure, culture, tooling and daily activities for agile. And once agile is adopted, the applications under development change on a daily (or more frequent) basis.

Agile methods have proven effective for software development and have grown in popularity across a number of software disciplines. Agile methods build capabilities using an iterative approach, as opposed to traditional approaches where requirements are defined early and designs are completed in full before a single line of code is written. Agile incrementally defines requirements with priorities, partial component designs and working systems that evolve through iterations called sprints. The question remains, however: Do the 12 agile principles apply to more than just software? Agile principles are in line with lean management’s approach. Given that, it seems as though agile principles should directly apply beyond software development. However, the answer is not straightforward, because differences between software and physical components affect how agile is applied. Let’s explore how agile can be applied in light of these differences.

In today’s era of digital transformation, time-to-market is the new name of the game, and DevOps is changing the way software is built. As developers have taken on a much larger role in the software development lifecycle, including developing secure code, building containers and ensuring quality, security cannot be separated from DevOps and engineering. Unfortunately, traditional software security testing tools have operated in isolation and have forced developers to change the way they work. Checkmarx, however, has developed a more agile and responsive solution: Checkmarx’ Software Exposure Platform. Taking a holistic, platform-centric approach, the platform builds security in from the beginning, supporting all stages of the software development lifecycle, allowing enterprises to deliver secure software at the speed of DevOps while mitigating their business risk. DevOps is fast becoming a core competency required to gain competitive advantage. At its most basic level, DevOps is a team approach to drive agile modern application development and operations to deliver high quality critical digital business services. Cloud services are fundamentally changing the way applications are developed. The near ubiquitous, lowfriction access to cloud computing for developers, who can literally access powerful computing resources at the touch of a keystroke or swipe of a credit card, has fundamentally altered the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
