To accommodate increasingly dense technology environments, increasingly critical business applications, and increasingly stringent service level demands, data centers are typically engineered to deliver the highest-affordable availability levels facility-wide. Within this monolithic design approach, the same levels of mechanical, electrical, and IT infrastructure are installed to support systems and applications regardless of their criticality or business risk if unplanned downtime occurs. Typically, high redundancy designs are deployed in order to provide for all eventualities. The result, in many instances, is to unnecessarily drive up both upfront construction or retro-fitting costs and ongoing operating expenses.

Today's datacenter networks must better adapt to and accommodate business-critical application workloads. Raising IT inlet temperatures is a common recommendation given to data center operators as a strategy to improve data center efficiency. While it is true that raising the temperature does result in more economizer hours, it does not always have a positive impact on the data center overall. In this paper, we provide a cost (capex & energy) analysis of a data center to demonstrate the importance of evaluating the data center holistically, inclusive of the IT equipment energy. The impact of raising temperatures on server failures is also discussed.

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.

For many organizations, the wide area network (WAN) infrastructure that connects an enterprise’s remote and branch offices has not changed for decades. Over the years, organizations consolidated many regional data centers into a few highly available data center locations which meant that remote locations had to connect to centralized applications over WANs and all internet traffic went through these data centers as well. This introduced bandwidth constraints and latency issues. The development in WAN optimization provided incremental and measurable improvement in WAN performance and provided some bandwidth cost containment. However, that technology typically was only deployed at the most problematic sites that struggled to achieve acceptable levels of performance and user experience. It did not solve all the issues with WAN connectivity. WAN infrastructure planning was limited to increases in capacity that were met by provisioning additional carrier MPLS (multiprotocol label switching)
