End-user computing leaders must act amid rapid market changes to reach both short-term and long-term enterprise mobility objectives. UEM is not limited to PCs, tablets and smartphones. Smart devices, broadly grouped as part of the IoT, will increasingly become included in UEM. Devices such as Apple TVs, printers and smartwatches are identifiable examples of IoT devices managed by EMM tools. However, not all IoT objects will fall under the realm of EMM tools. Some devices may be managed directly by manufacturers. Other types of devices will have proprietary management tools. And many devices will not need to be managed at all. However, it is clear that the diversity and number of devices will continue to grow, and IT organizations must be ready.

Recruiting leaders know that if their companies aren’t sourcing and hiring for diversity they are missing valuable talent and experience. This is one of the reasons diversity has been a focus area for improvement in recent years. Many organizations start with training. While diversity training is important for creating awareness, it doesn’t a¬ffect human behavior. A 2017 meta-analysis of studies investigating bias training confirmed this. Formal training can reduce unconscious bias, but it does not change behavior.13 This has put talent leaders in a di cult position. Online images used to be simple. In the past, they weren’t the focal point of a page — there were only a handful of images on a given page and all users were viewing online images on a desktop with dial-up. That has all changed. Today’s web pages are dynamic, filled with images and viewed by end users on different devices with varying connectivity. As audience expectations for rich web experiences have grown, so has the requirement to deliver increasingly image-heavy web applications. The problem? The cost and complexity of creating, storing, and delivering web images tailored for every device poses a significant challenge for businesses, but failing to address the increasing diversity across devices and networks will lead to a poor and inconsistent user experience. Current solutions don’t solve this problem completely.

As we might expect, 90% or more consider desktops, servers, routers, firewalls and printers to be endpoints that need to be protected. After that, respondents include other less-typical devices in their definition of endpoints that warrant protection: 71% include building security (access/ surveillance), 59% include employee-owned mobile devices and 40% consider industrial control systems as endpoints that need to be protected. Some respondents also consider POS devices, smart cars, emulated endpoints in the cloud and wearables as endpoints needing protection, highlighting the diversity of thinking among respondents.
