Virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) is a major breakthrough in network function virtualization (NFV). When asked where they have deployed NFV in production networks, communication service providers (CSPs) consistently name vEPC as one of the top answers. Why is that? This is driving a new approach to load balancing that starts at the edge. Powered by DNS, edge-based global load balancing (GLB) steers user traffic to destination endpoints based on IT-defined policies. GLB works independently or in concert with site-based, or on premises, load balancing technologies in a “federated” system. This approach applies load balancing and traffic steering policies at each layer from the user edge to the host—whether virtual or physical—where the request is actually served.

A leading U.S.-based financial services firm was faced with the growing challenge of providing consistent application performance to a vast employee base and nationwide network of partners. The company turned to Equinix to help redesign its network, both to improve performance and prepare for a move to a cloud-enabled environment. Equinix worked with the firm to deploy bi-coastal Equinix Performance Hubs, extension nodes of the company’s existing network placed in strategically located Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers. A Performance Hub moves services closer to end users and provides direct access to networks and cloud providers. By deploying Performance Hubs, the customer created a high-performance services platform for its business. The result was a dramatic decrease in network latency, improvements in application performance and an enhanced user experience.

Interconnecting three or more sites across a metro or wide area network has traditionally been accomplished via a hub and spoke network topology using Private Lines, Frame Relay or IP VPNs over the Internet. Ethernet services support hub and spoke topologies but also support an “any-to-any” network topology similar to a LAN but delivered over a wide area. This latter capability is unique to Ethernet services and cannot be cost effectively delivered using legacy point-to-point technologies such as Frame Relay or IP VPNs. This paper discusses two options for multi-site connectivity using Ethernet services. One option discusses the classical hub and spoke topology using Ethernet Virtual Private Lines (EVPL). The other option discusses the “any-to-any” topology using an Ethernet Private LAN (EP-LAN) service. Through examples, the paper illustrates the capabilities of the two approaches and their benefits.
